Elena Amato is a researcher in astronomy working at Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory, which is part of INAF (the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics). She obtained a Master degree in Physics from the University of Florence in 1998 and a PhD in Astronomy from the same University in 2001. She has been working as a researcher at INAF - Arcetri since the end of 2001.
Her research interests are in the field of theoretical High Energy Astrophysics. From the point of view of basic physics processes, she is interested in the acceleration and transport of relativistic particles and in the physics of relativistic plasmas. From thepoint of view of specific astrophysical sources and phenomena, her interests cover Cosmic Rays, Supernova Remnants and Pulsar Wind Nebulae.
Her research activity is documented by 63 scientific articles published in peer reviewed international journals and more than 50 conference proceedings, with a total of more than 2770 citations and a Hirsch factor H=31 (as from ADS). She has given invited talks in more than 30 international conferences and workshops and has presented oral contributions in at least 20 more.
As far as teaching activity is concerned, she has been teaching a PhD course in High Energy Astrophysics within the PhD program at the University of Florence from 2010 to 2016 and also taught in international PhD schools in 2012 and 2013. Since 2016 she is in charge, together with a colleague, of the High Energy Astrophysics course for master students in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Florence. She has also supervised three bachelor theses in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Florence and has been serving in several selection committees and master, PhD and habilitation juries, both in Italy and France.
In terms of services for the scientific community, she has been serving as a referee for all the main international journals in Physics and Astrophysic, and for several research funding agencies s and ministries in Italy and abroad. In addition she has been part of the Scientific Organization Committees of 19 international conferences, chairing, or co-chairing 6 of these. She is currently in charge of the Scientific Working Group on Cosmic Ray science of the upcoming gamma-ray experiment, CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array).
