This path is recommended for those particularly interested in theoretical and numerical modeling of astrophysical sources or basic physical processes. The main topics for a potential thesis in this field include plasma physics (especially in the solar corona, solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere, from the fluid to the kinetic level), relativistic or high-energy astrophysics (the study of compact objects like neutron stars and black holes, multi-messenger astrophysics including gravitational waves, particle acceleration mechanisms and non-thermal radiative processes), and aspects of cosmology, particularly the evolution of the first stars and first galaxies, and stellar archaeology.
The Theoretical Astrophysics path naturally fits within the Astrophysics curriculum, whose general rules must be followed when preparing this study plan. Below are some recommendations for choosing core, related/integrative, and elective astrophysical courses for this path.
|
Core courses (5 astrophysical courses as detailed below + 3 non-astrophysical courses) Astrophysics Cosmology Relativistic astrophysics Numerical methods for astrophysics Plasma physics |
|
Recommended related/integrative or elective courses (5 courses in total) At least three electives from: First stars and first galaxies (II) High energy astrophysics (II) Physics of the interstellar medium Solar and heliospheric physics (II) Stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis Other recommended courses: Frontiere dell'astrofisica* Gravitational waves Machine learning for physicists Physics of the atmosphere and climate Theories of the early universe** (II)
Other electives from the full list of supplementary/integrative courses, or core courses from this or other curricula, or courses from other study programs.
Notes: *If not already selected in the bachelor's program **Theoretical physics course, best taken after: Theoretical physics (II) Better attended at the second year, after taking the core exams |
