The path on Nuclear Reaction Physics naturally fits within the curriculum of Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics. Nuclear reaction physics uses ion collisions to characterize exotic nuclei, determine their excited states, and study the dynamics of nuclear reactions. Research conducted in Florence is carried out in collaboration with a network of laboratories, including the National Laboratories of Legnaro, the National Laboratories of the South, CERN, and GANIL (France). Among the scientific initiatives involving faculty members of the Department, in collaboration with INFN personnel, are: The FAZIA experiment, which studies the thermodynamics and dynamics of nuclei (using both stable and exotic ion beams) with the aim of thoroughly characterizing the nuclear equation of state and the processes of nuclear fragment formation; the SPES project, a complete facility for the study of radioactive beams; the GAMMA experiment, which uses gamma spectroscopy to study the structures and isospin properties of nuclei.
